🔍 Step 1: Do You Legally Need a TV Licence?
Under Part 4 of the Communications Act 2003, you only need a licence if you watch live TV or use BBC iPlayer. Check any that apply to your household:
I watch or record LIVE TV on any channel (Freeview, Sky, Virgin, live YouTube, Twitch)
Applies to ANY channel or online broadcast as it is being transmitted live.
I use BBC iPlayer (live, catch-up, or on-demand) on any device
Since 2016, BBC iPlayer requires a licence regardless of whether you watch live or catch-up.
I ONLY watch on-demand Netflix, Disney+, Amazon Prime, YouTube (non-live), or DVDs
LEGAL FACT: Watching on-demand services (other than BBC iPlayer) NEVER requires a TV Licence.
Someone in the home is 75+ receiving Pension Credit, or registered Blind (Severe Impairment)
Qualifies for a 100% Free Licence (over-75 on Pension Credit) or 50% discount (£84.75 blind concession).

By law, you do not need to pay £169.50/year. You can cancel your Direct Debit and claim a refund for any unused months.
💷 Step 2: Calculate Your Pro-Rata Refund
If you cancel with complete months remaining on your licence, TV Licensing must refund you at £14.12 per complete unused month.
